Who Usually Suffers from ED?
The Massachusetts Male Aging Study showed that at least 40% of men over the age of 40 had some level of erectile dysfunction. This increases to 70% of men at age 70!
Erectile dysfunction can be embarrassing and cause many problems in the health and happiness of relationships. This issue can also lead to low self-esteem, depression, and an overall decrease in a man’s quality of life. Fortunately, we can find a personalized solution to help you be confident in your performance.
How do Erections Function?
During sexual arousal, chemicals are released that increase blood flow to the penis. Blood flows into two erection chambers in the penis, made of spongy muscle tissue (the corpus cavernosum). These spongy tissues relax and trap blood, increasing the pressure in the chambers to make the penis firm, causing an erection.
When the penis is rigid, veins that drain blood from the penis are closed by the erect tissues, meaning blood stays in the penis to maintain the erection.
What Causes ED?
Physical issues could include decreased blood flow into the penis (arterial insufficiency), increased blood flow out of the penis (venous leak), or nerve damage. Common causes also include:
- Most often when blood flow in the penis is limited or nerves become damaged by disease or injury
- With stress or emotional hardship
Erectile dysfunction can also be an early warning of a more serious illnesses, like atherosclerosis (hardening or blocked arteries), heart disease, high blood pressure, or high blood sugar from diabetes. Finding the cause(s) of your ED will help treat the problem and help maintain your overall well-being.
ED Risk Factors
- Being over age 40
- Having high blood sugar (diabetes)
- Having high blood pressure or cholesterol
- Having cardiovascular disease
- Smoking
- Using drugs or drinking too much alcohol
- Being obese
- Lacking exercise
Seeking ED Treatment?
The treatment for ED starts with an initial evaluation of your health history, hormone testing, and determination of the cause of your specific problem. Sometimes blood testing can identify hormone levels that are out of balance. Many times, a combination of therapies is required to gain the firmness of erections men seek.
ED Treatments Available
Non-invasive treatments are usually tried first.
- FDA-approved oral medications are often prescribed in the U.S. for ED (Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, Stendra)
- Testosterone therapy (when low testosterone is detected in blood testing)
- Penile injections (ICI, intracavernosal Alprostadil)
- Vacuum erection devices
- Oral drugs (PDE5 inhibitors)
SWT or Sound/Shock Wave Therapy from Prime Men’s Health
Sonic Wave Therapy utilizes high-frequency, low-intensity sound waves to improve blood flow to the penis. The sound waves repair aged blood vessels, stimulate growth of new blood vessels, and stimulate the removal of micro-plaque.
After an evaluation by one of our providers, each treatment takes between 15-20 minutes. Some men experience results after the very first treatment.
Many of the results our patients have reported are:
- Return of morning erections
- More firm, full erections
- Spontaneous erections without medications
- Erections with medication, when ineffective before
- Increased sensation
- More stamina
